To strive is to devote serious energy and effort. We strive for excellence. We strive to do better. This is the “can-do” attitude of owning problems and developing solutions. You work toward a clear goal.
To allow is to make space—for feelings to come up, to take chances, to relax and take your foot of the accelerator. It is a time for exploration, to let go of outcomes and attachments, to let yourself off the hook.
For example, confidence is a success trait for which we strive. You use it to speak up and to take on challenges. If you take confidence beyond striving, you start to force solutions, controlling people and outcomes. To allow is to be confident you’ve done everything you can for today andallowthe process to unfold. Tomorrow you can strive for confidence again, knowing that you will also allowspace for exploration and other possibilities.
Here’s an example I saw during my walk in the town of Nazare, Portugal. Women sell dried fish. They put in energy and effort to lay the fish out in a way they can dry efficiently.
Strive for perfection, then allow the results to perfectly unfold.
Strive for excellence, then allow the excellence to emerge.
Strive for your goals and allow your intention to be to live joyfully each day, independent of reaching the goal.
Striving and allowing are the yin and yang of success.
