This too shall pass. Like a kidney stone, it will pass.

Judy called me on a Friday afternoon frantic. She struggled to make her sales numbers at work which meant her bonus checks had dried up. Then she got the news her husband lost his job. Their prudent reserve fund was depleted and she was at wit’s end.

When life throws curveballs do this:

  • Take 3 deep breaths. You might notice that your breath starts shallow and fast, but becomes deeper and more regular as you relax more deeply.
  • Identify sounds. Focus on the most obvious sounds such as birdcalls and traffic.
  • Feel your arms resting on your lap and your legs on the chair. Notice any pains, muscle tightness, or fluttering in your stomach.
  • Move. Go to the bathroom, grab a cup of coffee, take the dog for a walk, unload the dishwasher.

I asked Judy to take three deep breaths and to move her body.

“Walk around your office and focus your eyes on your left foot then your right foot while repeating, “Left/right, left/right, left/right.”

This technique interrupted her thought loop and got her to focus.

As she calmed down she was able to consider options. Judy knew the challenge was real and that she and her husband had been through hard times before.

So far, you’ve survived 100% of your worst days.

When things are bad, remember it won’t always be this way.
