Whenever Two Hearts Are Gathered… My Silent Retreat Miracle

American radio commentator Paul Harvey delivered ‘The Rest of the Story’ broadcast to more than 24 million listeners six days a week, for more than 3 decades. He would give listeners the backstory to people, things, and events, both famous and not-so-famous.

I listened to him whenever my family went on road trips. His voice was soothing and his stories were captivating.

In Paul Harvey style, here is ‘The Rest of the Story’.

We gathered Friday night and chatted before going into the silence. I met Eileen. She is 71 and originally from Scotland. She told the story of meeting her birth mother’s family three years earlier. She always knew she was adopted and decided it was time to go find them.

She worked with a social worker, discovered she has a brother, and made arrangements to meet him in her birth town of Glasgow. She was scared to knock on the door. Would he be nice or mean? She experienced love, healing, and lots of surprises. The first surprise was that nobody knew about her, not even her mother’s husband!

They’ve reconnected several times since then and her brother gave her his mother’s brooch.

We met for breakfast on Saturday. Eileen wore the brooch. I acknowledged it with a big smile and I put my hands on my heart.

After breakfast I journaled on the topic of receiving. Women are great at giving and struggle with receiving. I teach women the importance of balancing giving with receiving. As I got up to leave the main gathering hall, Eileen placed her mother’s brooch in my hand and gave me a hug.

I was stunned. I didn’t move for a few minutes. “OMG! She can’t be serious. She can’t give me her birth mother’s brooch! I just wrote about the need for women to receive!”

We came out of the silence on Sunday and gathered to share about our experience. I told the entire group this story. Eileen cried and hugged me. She told me she was guided to give it to me. “Whenever two hearts are gathered, there is love.”

I don’t know what all this means, except that there is far more love in the world than I can imagine.
