Before You Plan Q2, Do This First

As April begins, there’s a natural pull toward what’s next.

New goals. Fresh momentum. A renewed sense of direction.

If you’re a high-achieving leader, you’re likely already thinking about Q2; what you want to build, what needs to move forward, and how to make the next three months count.

But before you dive into planning, there’s one step most leaders skip, and it’s the one that makes the biggest difference.

You need to look back.

That may feel counterintuitive. After all, you’re wired to move forward. Progress, growth, expansion; that’s where your focus naturally goes. Looking back can feel like slowing down or even losing ground.

But the most effective leaders don’t just plan forward, they reflect backward.

Because Q1 isn’t just something to move on from. It’s a goldmine of insight.

And if you’re willing to look at it honestly, it will give you everything you need to make Q2 your strongest quarter yet.

Why Reflection Comes Before Strategy

There’s a common misconception that better results come from better planning.

But in reality, sustainable momentum doesn’t come from planning harder. It comes from understanding deeper.

When you skip reflection, you risk repeating the same patterns:

Setting goals that don’t align with your actual capacity

Making decisions based on assumptions instead of experience

Carrying forward habits that quietly limit your progress

Reflection interrupts that cycle.

It grounds your next move in reality not just intention.

And that’s where real confidence is built.

Here are four steps to Reset and Realign for Q2
If you want to move into Q2 with clarity and purpose, here’s where to begin:
1. Go back to January

Go back to what you set at the start of the year—your goals, intentions, and priorities.

But instead of reviewing them as “your plan,” read them as if they belong to someone else.

Ask yourself:

What was this person believing was possible?

What assumptions were they making?

What fears might have been influencing these decisions?

This isn’t about judging yourself. It’s about understanding the mindset you were leading from—because that mindset shaped everything that followed.

2. Audit what actually happened

Now, look at Q1 as it truly unfolded.

Where did you follow through? Where did things slip and why?

Be honest, but not harsh. You’re not looking for faults. You’re looking for data.

Consider:

What pulled your focus away from your original priorities?

What unexpected opportunities showed up?

What decisions did you make, and what were they really based on?

Q1 already holds the answers to many of Q2’s challenges. You just need to extract them.

3. Define your June 30th outcome

Before you create a single plan for Q2, get clear on where you’re going.

Not in vague terms but with precision.

What does success look like by June 30th?

What have you accomplished, shifted, or completed? What are you no longer carrying?

Clarity here changes everything. When you know your destination, your decisions become sharper, faster, and more aligned.

4. Count the weeks, then plan backwards

From April to the end of June, you have 13 weeks.

That’s it.

When you see your time as finite and specific, your planning becomes more intentional.

Map your priorities against those 13 weeks:

What needs to happen in April to set May up for success?

What must happen in May to make June’s outcome achievable?

Planning backwards from a defined result turns vague ambition into focused action.

And focus is what creates momentum.

The Real Advantage Most Leaders Miss

Most Q2 planning is built on optimism.

But the strongest strategies are built on awareness.

When you connect your next move to your actual experience—what worked, what didn’t, and why—you lead from a place of grounded confidence.

Not because your goals are bigger.

But because your understanding is deeper.

That’s what creates sustainable success.

One Question to Guide Your Quarter

As you step into Q2, don’t start with your to-do list.

Start here:

What does June 30th look like if everything goes exactly the way you want it to?

Sit with that.

Get specific.

Then work backwards and move forward with intention.

Because the best plans aren’t built on hope alone.

They’re built on honest reflection and a clear vision of where you’re headed next.
