It’s time for a reality check.
Sitting at her breakfast table drinking her morning coffee, Brittany opened her laptop and looked at her to-do list for the day. Five meetings, two proposals due to contracts, 237 unread emails, and Jimmy’s soccer game at 4:00pm.
She could feel her cheeks and neck flushing and hear a whooshing sound in her head. Sick to her stomach, she skipped breakfast.
“If only…..” she sighed.
“If only the world would stop. Then I could get things done and feel better.”
Pause for a reality check.
Most women……
- have super-human, unrealistic expectations of what can be accomplished in a day
- don’t stop to analyze how it can be different because they are too overwhelmed and the thought of stopping is scary.
The reality is…..
- You will always have more to do than there are hours in a day
- You have to constantly make choices of how to spend your time and energy
- Sleep-walking through life doesn’t work.
Accept the fact that you do not have control over the external world, that you need other people to help you grow, and when you stop responding to everyone and everything, you regain the control you can effectively exert.
Brittany asked her boss for help. She laid out her priorities and the amount of time needed for each one.
She rescheduled her team and contracts meetings and spent the morning finishing the first of two proposals. She delegated the second proposal to her team and reviewed their work before submitting it to contracts.
Brittany left work on time and enjoyed watching her son play soccer.
