Your values are your North Star.
The North Star is an analogy to describe what someone uses as a guiding light.
The term North Star comes from a time when sailors would use Polaris as the constant to navigate the ship to safe ports. It was the brightest star in the night sky, so it could always be found. If you knew where the North Star was, you could use it as a reference point to plot your course.
Your values are the North Star that keeps you on course.
As your guiding light, you count on it to correct and guide you in everything you do. If you go off course in the way you do things, it is only by your North Star that you can get back on course.
Definition
Values are the principles that you believe are important in the way you live and work. They are the measures to tell if your life is going in the right direction.
When you act in a way that matches your values, life goes smoother, and you are more content. When your actions don’t match your values, life feels “wrong.”
If you value time with your family but work eighty hours a week, there is a disconnect between your actions and your values. If you value a healthy mind and body, but spend no time exercising or meditating, you have a disconnect with your values.
How to identify your values:
- Identify the times when you were happiest. What were you doing, who were you with
- Identify the times when you were most proud. What factors contributed to your feelings of pride?
- Identify the times when you were most fulfilled.
List your top three values. Faith, family, love, serenity, service, excellence, balance, and curiosity are some examples. Post them where you can see them daily.
